Just a shorty today!
Not a lot to report. Just poked at some writing on Emmy and did my damnedest to catch up on bug reports. Also wasted the better part of an hour figuring out how to get the redirect on taintedspace.com to actually point at the forums. I also gave the zil a crappy bow that ought to let you start training with Tanis much much sooner.
Yay. early bows. Easier maxed stats.
What the heck is the point of stats if it’s so easy to max them? -_-
Let’s just go ahead and start as a GOD from the beginning, shall we?
I am also wondering this.
Fun fact: the implementation of Sky Sap made it possible to cap out all of your stats.
Goddamnit, Jim.
Sky Sap decreases physique by 1 and slow increases reflex by 2. It also has the side effect of turning you into a highly feminine tentacle girl. You’ve also got to beat people up for it.
In that sense, it should be a lot more balanced than a trainer who only gives an increase, with no side effects.
Save scumming for the increase only.
Also. if your physique is low enough, then the sky sap won’t decrease it.
There’s a significant difference between “I can obtain max stats early on through normal gameplay and with minimal effort” and “I can obtain max stats early via excessive grinding and save scumming.”
The first leads to normal players playing the game, maxing out early, then becoming bored with the fact leveling gives less of a rush and stat point earning means less. In the end, the impact of stats ends up being nerfed as a result to stop things from being broken. E.g. People commenting about how ‘stats don’t impact much anyway’. In my opinion, that’s a problem, they probably *should*, or else why are they there at all?
The second leads to a scenario where a small subsection of people after a great amount of effort, feel a sense of accomplishment of getting max stats in everything and feeling OP. Their stats matter through the game because stats aren’t made to be that high, that early, and their affects haven’t been nerfed. The people who want to max out their stats win, and the people who want to feel like their stat points matter also win.
Exactly.
Fair point. If you can just max Aim whenever you want, then why isn’t it just always maxed? The only difference between that and how it currently works is that you have to fly back to Mhen’ga every level to get your free 5 Aim (and Int from Syri).
This may sound strange, but I’m really starting to feel like stat trainers are just too much. We should be agonizing over where to put our precious level-up stat points, trying to balance strengths and weaknesses… instead, my current character (who never uses melee attacks) has 40 Physique because, well, why the fuck not? I get my Aim for free so I gotta put my points somewhere else.
That said, I’m really happy about the new bow. I’m gonna grab one on pretty much all ranged characters as soon as it’s in the game.
And is the wiki right, it gives 5 Evasion? That would make it the best ranged weapon for all melee characters!
And those folks like me who don’t know about those particular trainers kind of miss out, so you end up with a gigantic stat divide.
IMO, if a trainer gives you five points in something, you should have to pay for it, or take a -5 in something else. I actually like agonizing over where to put my points at level up. I’m kind of irked about these trainers showing up.
Its not like its easy to get max stats. You do have to put work into it. Getting to max lvl on easy to beat enemies is boring.
I disagree. I WANT to max my character out if I desire. If I know the tips and tricks I want to be able to achieve the best character I can. If you don’t WANT to have the greatest ultimate character then don’t abuse the system.
To me it’s like the people who proclaimed that X and Y was too easy, after they had proceeded to use the EXP Share the entire journey, filled up on potions and max revive, grinded their pokemon ten levels ahead of the enemy trainers. Yeah, no crap it’s easy. You abused the system to DO so. All the while I struggled to keep up with the level advancement of the trainers and had to grind for a couple levels by the time I made it to Victory Road.
If you dislike having the ability to max out your stats then don’t use Syri’s conversation, don’t use the Gym, and don’t use any of the stat raising mechanics that are in place. If you WANT to agonize over those decisions then go right ahead. Nothing wrong with that.
But SOME of us like the option of having a character that we don’t need to struggle to win at certain fights to continue the story. Since we can’t grind to get a higher level we can at least maximize our stats as best we can. Besides, the stats are limited by levels anyway. There are already measures in place so you CAN’T exceed a certain maximum. To me that means that it SHOULD be possible to get your stats up to that point if it’s the set limit.
That’s the thing. If you can max out every stat, you take out all the thought out of optimization. Any moron who happens to know about the trainers will have maxed stats. That’s incredibly boring.
With a limited number of stat points, you have to be smart about it. You have to know how game mechanics work, you have to know what weapons are available, you have to know how enemy encounters function and what you need most to beat them. If you know all that, you’re in a rare position to figure out the best builds and can achieve the best character that you can (emphasis on that second “can”), without just brute-force breaking the game through having all stats maxed.
Saying “well you can just voluntarily cripple yourself” doesn’t work. If you’re crippling yourself, you’re not optimizing.
The ideal is a system that lets you optimize without letting you exploit and abuse. Trainers let you exploit and abuse.
I think you’re overselling the difficulty and impact of point investments. In the very beginning, when choosing which class to play, the game actually points out the stats the class needs. All you have to do is to put your level-up points in the stats the game explicitly tells you to, and the left-over bits (because you get more than enough to max two stats) to where ever you want. There’s very little power difference between, say, a Mercenary with all stats maxed, and a Mercenary with maxed Physique and low other stats.
Perks, which you already get in limited number, could have a much greater effect on your performancy, but sadly there the only meaningful choice is usually “melee or ranged”.
I’ve got to admit that the current base stat system is a bit faulty that way; any idiot can max the two “important” stats every level and put the rest into the next most important one, and there you go, optimization achieved, no actual thought required. Why the fuck have point distribution if everyone’s always going to put them in the same stats? Why not just automatically give +5/+5/+3 to the relevant stats at level up?
I can only agree with the perks thing, I’ve been discussing that a lot these past few days. You pick one melee or ranged perk and then every other time you have to pick, you’ll just automatically pick the one that matches previous choices. They could just ask you if you want to be melee or ranged at character creation and remove the need to manually select half the perks.
Apparently, the lack of customization options is actually *intended*. That’s a really nasty hit to my morale regarding the game. I mean, I know you can’t please everyone and the game was never going to be custom-made just for me, but damn… nothing is going the way I’d hoped here.
Save scumming can be a pain for some people.
As to the arguement about about why doing it. It makes it so you can do the quests with high stat requirements. The Hand-so quest is the perfect example. Try getting Hand-so from that quest with low intelligence.
You can do it with low Int (even with 0, apparently). Some sadistic bastard just decided that people will less Int would have to savescum the encounter like crazy to get her. Which is even more irritating because they still haven’t fixed the permanent bold text bug, and you can even get a random encounter in that tile in addition to the event (it’ll trigger right after the event, so you can win the event and then die to a random mob).
Ah well. I learned yesterday that the “game” is basically just an interface for the porn, it was never intended to be an actual game. With that perspective, you know you just shouldn’t hold it to normal standards. It’s still sad, but it’s not infuriating.
A game doesn’t have to be complex to be considered a game. Tic Tac Toe is a game. TiTS is a porn RPG, and would be a game even if it had no combat mechanics.
I understand why you’re disappointed, but that doesn’t mean TiTS isn’t an “actual game”. Its standards are somewhat different than those of many other RPGs, but that also doesn’t mean it’s not being held to standards.
The randomness of acquiring Hand So is probably due to misunderstanding between Nonesuch and whoever coded the encounter, and as for bugs, well, you know how to find the bug report forum. In my experience the bugs that actually get reported are fixed rather fast.
There’s an easy mode for people who just want to blast through the game to get to sex scenes or whatever.
Stat trainers aren’t a bad idea, but preventing maxing is just basic gameplay balance.
It’s only natural that the game’s unbalanced at a point when the push is to get as much content as possible in there and working. Tweaking the balance is a later stage in development.
That said it might be a good idea to think about limiting how high each stat can go based on more than just level. In the beginning, when you choose your upbringing, it could have more of an impact and make a good start toward solving this problem if it reflected the general build the character can have. Athletic reflects a higher stat cap for physical stats and a lower one for mental stats while something like Balanced would have a mid-range cap for every stat but leave you unable to max any for example.
Any chance of getting “Bikini with torn stocking and combat boots” as an outfit?
You could always imagine the “comfortable clothes” as such.
Quiet’s outfit? Fuck it, I’d probably wear it.
Boots are kinda tricky when the PC might not even have legs, let alone feet.
any progress on emmy is a productive day! hope to see LOTS of content for her in the future :3
Is Sera ever going to get a sale item that *isn’t* feminizing? I mean, hell, one of the first things she ever says to you is asking if you’re looking to get a dick! Literally:
“Look, I’m sure you don’t care about any of that. Is there a mod you want? A big fat dick?…”
And yet still the only way (that I know of) to get a human dick is a roundabout method involving Throbb and Terran Treats – which isn’t *too* much of a pain, but still kind of frustrating to have to go to the trouble when one of the first shopkeeps you meet has suggesting that she sells something capable of accomplishing the same thing in one go…
Oh, wait, hold on, Throbb doesn’t force an Ausar dong on you? I could’ve sworn it used to… okay, so it’s slightly simpler a process than I thought 😛
Still though, it’d be nice to have an option without Throbb’s side effects
