Firstly, Jim Sterling did a pretty decent video on the situation. Usually I don’t care much for his content as he has a tendency to spend 20 minutes saying 5 minutes worth of things, but this one is decent. It gives some good background on the group claiming responsibility.
Now, the affected developers are reporting getting messages from Valve saying the previous warning was in error, and that a manual review was being done. I feel like it’s too early to declare victory, especially when the manual review could still demand further censorship, but it’s a start.

Whelp. There goes the internet.
in what way I may ask.
So instead of helping third world countries or the less fortunate, this group decided to ban risqué visual novels on Steam…
they decided to take credit for it. the group itself doesn’t really do much of anything since no one really listens to them other than their very niche demographic
something is better then nothing one can say. and this at least is something. but how long till this starts back up again?
Does it really matter? A company should be able to enforce whatever policy they want.
Steam is not the only game marketplace in the world and there are websites that not accept these games, but absolutely cater to them.
If we’re going to take some stand for Huniepop (a game that forces you to play for 40+ mins for single jpegs of SWEET ANIME T I T S) and Munity (An actually decent “game” but again, specific sites absolutely already cater to VNs). While games like Doki Doki and Grisia have managed to make themselves onto Steam, if I remember correctly these games had to be heavily edited to make the cut, so I’m not sure why this recent bout of censorship is shocking.
This whole event seems like a lot of grandstanding about a non-issue.
Considering having a game on steam instantly guarantees much higher sales than anywhere else, it is an issue. And while they are free to restrict what they sell however they want, it’s a dick move to tell people that certain things are okay and then yank the rug out from under them while they’re actively spending money on sequels based on budgets that assume it will be sold on steam.
Additionally, we as consumers are free find issue with a store’s policies and let them know that we’ll be happy to turn to other stores if they keep up this kind of bullshit.
see my post below. It may be actionable. Especially if it is the result of a coordinated action by a group of individuals pushing purity or censoring others because of their stance on entertainment. //
Damn straight
You also got to remember that many people have already purchased these games for the content in them, and its pretty shit for valve to out of the blue say “Hey, you know that reason everyone bought your game? Your gonna have to take it out now.”
The way they’re handling it seems to be a bigger issue than the policy change itself.
lmao, bringing Doki Doki into a discussion of smutty visual novels. You, sir, clearly don’t know anything about the game other than the genre.
It looks like this blew up in their face and they’re feeling it. The community backlash should they pull stunts like this is not something to take lightly.
Personally i don’t like religion they try to force people to conform to there beliefs or the gods punish you. It’s annoying.
I read “Jim” and was sad it wasn’t Mr. Metokur…
Metokur isn’t a pimple on Jim’s fat ass. Sterling is a critic of shitty practices in the video game industry and a consumer advocate. The other, well have you seen his stuff? Chronicling D-list YouTube drama and ranting about people’s weird fetishes isn’t exactly intellectually stimulating content.
Jim used to be good but then he went and drank the radical juice.
Metokur is just an another feminists rekt YouTuber for 13-year olds.
dang all this salt. keep up the butthurt guys. insallah.
Sometimes we have to make Steam remember who has all the money…
They have all the money. The demographic who buys VNs is small, and a relatively minor market compared to most every other one on Steam.
lol I don’t buy VNs on Steam doesn’t mean I don’t care about a third party regulating what I can and cannot buy. A non-VN buyer can boycott as much as much as anyone else.
we just need to remember, Valve doesn’t give a shit, and once a game or community has made them enough money, they will pretty much pull the plug and do something to fuck over the community around a game or genre, first the CS:GO trading ban and now this
You and others in this media subset may really want to look into pursuing action under Tortious Interference and also Sherman Act FCA(?) subset articles– Several prominent authors are pursuing this already vs SJW’s and Liberals who’ve defamed and libeled folks for “wrongthink” or not towing the “Party” line.
I can give you contact information for a Lawyer in Indiana who’s putting together a case for the above authors (both civil and to forward to Feds for litigation) — Please PM or Email me if you want to talk to this gent. If he can’t help, he can give you names of local lawyers that could.
This is why I don’t buy games on Steam.
After Patreon and Steam, it’s time for adult game developers to create their own site for Adult games. These sites will continue restricting sexual content because they know they can get away with it.
They did try, but I think the market is just too small. Offbeatr didn’t last very long.
Great video. I thank God every day for Jim Fucking Sterling Son!
I thought Huniedev was being ironic with the stereotypes in Huniepop but judging by his anti-SJW stance I guess not
firstly, fuck jim sterling and his perpetual soap box sermon
I think the video presented a good point that most likely Steam is reacting to pressure from PayPal, not SJWs of any flavor.
I don’t think he is correct in assuming that PayPal themselves bowed down before the thought police, unfortunately I think they caved to economic factors. Specifically, people that will use PayPal to pay for a porn subscription or camsite credit, then claim they were scammed or hacked and demand a refund. Instead of arbitrating or investigating such complaints and refusing refunds they decided it was easier to cut support to any account or vendor that offered any kind of sexual content.
Anime Tittie Apocalypse!!!!!!
Anyway I hope this issue encourages Steam to get their collective heads out of their asses and actually make some changes going forward. This whole censoring thing along with a tidal wave of scams and asset flips crowding the store means that Steam is no longer very attractive for indies.
You mean there are updates on this site that AREN’T about gobbling cocks?
Good old Jim Fucking Sterling Son. Yeah he rambles on a bit much sometimes, but damn if he doesn’t give an accurate kick in the balls to those that deserve it. Valve on the other hand did the bare minimum effort here as always. Just like any other company.
Ha I love it Illusion just got a game on steam, and now they are doing a crack down on nudity lol
There’s something inimitable about the sheer venom Britishers can put into the humble word “wanker”.
It has a uniquely duck-like quacking quality to it, indeed.
A duck is fine too…
I mean, what? >_>
Okay this made me laugh. Maybe because I heard John Cleese say it in my head.
I can’t really bring myself to watch the video to the end. All I hear is a guy venting his frustration over the issue, not actually presenting an argument for it. Like, the camera turns on and then the ranting begins.
Jim “let’s put signs on metro to tell men not to rape to piss off non-feminists” Sterling being rational for once. Now I’ve seen everything.
Pfft.
Valve isn’t going to do a damned thing about this. They’ve been laughably inconsistent about porn games ever since Steam Greenlight first opened.
Valve won’t do anything which could harm their revenue. There is no point in trying to censor or to get rid of those games, because the developers will simply move to another platform or make their own one. Or they will simply bypass the censorship by allowing the user to download the “censorship fix patch” from the developers home page which isn’t anything new.
