Uhh did I miss something with Riya? Because the way that character is written makes it sound like she’s a parody or a joke but unfortunately not a very good one.
I don’t have a problem with her being a racist, heck nearly all Myrs are racists and I love ’em to death.
It’s just how unrealistically and childish her racism is portrait. It’s something someone would write as a parody of a racist cop. Sorry if I just missed the most obvious punchline I’m not even angry or upset but more confused. She’s written like a parody but kinda isn’t.

I’ve gotta agree with you here, I’m not a huge fan of the way that she’s written. Not to mention some small part of me really wishes that it was possible to actually hit her :’)
It’ll be possible when the level cap is raised above 8. Just the once, and then she gets chewed out afterwards. It does make sense, tho, that she’s got great reflexes– she’s former special ops and did military touring.
That said, what a flying thundercunt. I look forward to breaking, jailing, indenturing, or otherwise making this one my bitch, however and whenever it becomes possible.
That said, blatant racism/anti-LGBT statements are still very much alive and well, and some people are pretty much above reproach.
Yeah, I look forward to doing similar to her, I just always find it amusing when my PC can single-handedly take down space pirate mechs, power armor, crazy death robots and alien queens, but some stuck up bitch at Tavros is too much for them.

I’ve never been a fan of the badger, but if this Riya character winds up chained to a wall as the badger’s bimbo sex slave, my opinions of the good Doctor would change for the better.
I haven’t hated a character as much as this one since…never actually. I didn’t hate Kelt so much as strongly dislike him, I was merely annoyed by the Badger. Kelt actually had something to offer, a skill that made him not useless. He served a purpose other than being a sexist little shit. The badger was annoying in that I couldn’t initially do anything about her, but her behavior didn’t make me angry. In a game where every enemy wants to turn you into a personal sex toy, one more character who wants to do that isn’t much of a biggie- the only downside was the lack of a way to turn the tables.
This Riya offers nothing, and doesn’t seem to fit with the rest of what I would consider “enemies” in the game. Her racism isn’t even convincing, like topfpflanze said, it seems more like a parody of racism. Like she’s just intentionally as annoying as possible. And then, when seeking to “deal” with the issue…you can’t. Even if I make my PC capable of landing the punch to the face, I just wind up in jail for a day, pinned down by other security guards that were apparently roaming around. Then she just stays there in the corner, being a smart ass “hope you got that punch out of your system”.

Dude you’re playing a smut game where you fuck literally everything with holes and you’re getting up in moral arms. Oh my god, calm down. Every character in this game is a complete sleaze bag.
Not a fan ether, getting a lot of DR. Badger vibes form this character. Her xenophobia is childish and unexplained, its something that just is, the character serves as noting more then denigration and be dis empowering to the PC with no possibility of recourse. And that’s what bugs me the most, the PC has Zero ability do do anything about her except maybe one day punch her in the face and if the writer feels like it get her reassigned. She is a villain with a lack of justification for her villainy and impenetrable plot armor, that only serves to take agency away from the player. People have mentioned this before on the forums and sadly the writer has been antagonistic and dismissive of criticism, stating that she dose not need to be complex as this is just a “typefucking” game and nobody cares about the characters only the sex. I can not possibly disagree with him more.
Sure being dis-empowered may very well be some peoples fetish and there is no reason they should not be catered too, however for those whom it is not there explicit fetish, there option for interacting with this character should not be accept that there better then you and avoid them completely. From a pure game play perspective that’s the epitome of a not fun or entertaining interaction. I guess I just wish the author had been more open to criticism and that the character had spent more time in the oven before being approved to be added. As she is now there is just nothing likeable or endearing about her except that she is a bitch and there is literally nothing you can do about it except sit there and take it like a little bitch, and I have to ask, how is that fun?
Except the plot armor is the only even remotely noteworthy criticism and even then Franks said he might deal with that after the rest is done. Authors should be writing what they want to write anyhow.
Do you know everything and anything about any given individual? No, you don’t. It stands to reason that an abrasive person would be less than likely to share the true reasons behind their actions. Besides, wondering why somebody is racist is just as engaging if not more so than basically being omniscient.
Also, indirect fetish bashing. Who gives a fuck what other people like. If you don’t like it you can just ignore it. It’s not hard and anything contrary to the practice is just petulence.

I was pretty sure that people would get annoyed with this character, but I still don’t find any issues with adding her. Frank wrote something he wanted to write, and it got accepted. Happy story for him, and people who might enjoy this character.
Just like for Kelt and Badger people may avoid this character, and one day, like TheDevilYouKnow just said, Frank might write up a way to deal with her attitude or her person.
Holy White knighting batman! Look my fellow comment dweller I am stating MY opinion and perceptions of the character. I am stating why I don’t like her, Why I don’t think she works in the context of the game form the perspective of a player and what I wish was changed, nothing more. Chill out. You raise a point that in real life we often don’t know the motivations for someones actions and the corrupt and vile often go unpunished. But this is not real life, this is a text based adventure game that at lest makes the attempt to build a interesting universe strung together by a narrative and filled with compelling characters. Hopefully for the enjoyment of ALL who play this game. As such one of the reasons why this character is NOT compelling to me and others is because she lacks motivation for her frankly cartoonish level of xenophobia.
I am not indirectly bashing anybody’s fetish even if I don’t personally share a fetish for humiliation and being degraded, nor understand it. Hell a lot of people don’t understand how furrys can find what they find attractive. And indeed I said in my post that people with this fetish should receive there content. What I also stated is that people who do not share this fetish should have a means to deal with her so that they can get some enjoyment out of interacting with the character too.
Yes writers should be able to write what they wish no one is saying otherwise, however when you release something to the public you open yourself up to other peoples criticism and opinions on your art. Just because an artist has individual freedom over there work dose not invalidate peoples reaction to enjoyment of or lack of enjoyment of there work, and inevitably her inclusion will contribute to peoples enjoyment or lack of enjoyment of the game as a whole. Art dose not receive protection from criticism for the sake of being art, most certainly when it is released for mass consumption.
I also love that you are accusing me of indirectly bashing peoples fetishes when the character in question could be argued to exist for the explicit purposes of bashing and antagonizing players for there fetishes (transformation, furry) without the player being able to retaliate against the antagonist in any meaningful way. But hay at least YOU can voice your opinion and have a dialogue with the man your accusing, do that around her and your getting tazed and arrested. The irony is palpable.

At no point in my post did I state nor insinuate that you created the character to piss me off, or that you attacked, antagonized, or interacted with me personally in any way shape or form. Basically, I read the Doc. She’s just arrogant with Power, when she first sees a Modded Human/Half-Breed/Different Race. She kinda ‘thoroughly’ Checks them out as they Walk around/to her and she always has a Hand near her Taser. Basically Typical Racist White Cop when it comes to African Americans back before Black People even Had Rights and whatnot. Heck even now Racist Cops are a Thing. Back on Topic, whilst ‘Humans’ she barely Pays attention to… unless they Approach her. The closer a Human Gets, the Closer her hand is to her Taser. If you approached her as a Modded/Different Race, you do so for Directions ‘Apparently’ and she’s all like. “Let’s see here, Go to the Hangar and get the Fuck off this Station.” Any Retort, or Asking of why the Racism causes her to get Defensive and ‘Trigger Happy’ though that’s with her having her hand close to the Taser. For Humans on the other hand, they start Chatting each other up and talk about games. You ‘can’ do two things as of now as a Non-human. Report her which Yields no Results. Seeing as Riya knows people ‘Way’ above the Commanding Officer up on Tavors. So they instead offered to Transfer said Commanding Officer to some other Planet when she tried doing something before Steele even met the Commanding Officer, telling Steele she can’t deal with Riya lest she gets forced Transfered, or Fired. Just because Riya used to be a Special Ops Soldier. Or, you could fucking Deck her in the Face. Which Yields to either her Dodging and making you her Bitch like some Abusive Boyfriend. Or with a High enough Reflexes skill. To hit her, but do absolutely nothing and she pins you to the Floor. So you basically can’t do anything but get your Ass Beat.

Slowly yet surely making her ‘Submit’ like Kelt did to the player.
I seem to Recall Penny saying this, but not word for word. That she doesn’t Simply jump on the Bad Side of Any Stranger, or Yell at anyone for Breaking Crimes on any Core Worlds/Stations. Lest they be a Politician’s son and have the Ability to fuck Penny up.
Way I see it, Steele Corp’s one of the Biggest Companies. If it ever desired to, or if Steele had enough Credits to go ‘Under’ and Shady. Steele ‘Could’ find a way to Pay off Politicians, and People way above the Chain of Command. Like Way above, so he’d actually be able to get there with his own Finances alone.

You know what? your right, my wording in that was not sufficient to convey what I was trying to say, Yes the player should always have the option to not engage in a character, however what I was trying to convey is that the character should at least be tangentially tolerable for someone that dose not share a particular fetish, in this case humiliation and dis-empowerment, in there interactions with the character. In the majority of characters in TiTS/CoC at this time, the player has some method of dealing with the character in question. Dr Badger, Kelt, ect. Even with characters that cant be meaningfully confronted you can possibly have a meaningful interaction with them were you can learn why they feel the way they do and possibly empathize such as Sera, its a rewarding interaction even if you don’t share the fetish.
With Riya, the player is given no such opportunity. The only option to a player that dose not want to be made her bitch is to avoid interaction altogether, meaning that the content and everything related to her is more or less non intractable. Which would be a shame as I find her commanding officer to be an interesting character and one i might want to get to know, and the theme and ideas surrounding the character to be interesting. yes avoidance should be an option, but it shouldn’t be the only option.
All of those characters were put in without that for a long time, this time is no different, and in fact, it’s clear there’s grounds for possible ways to turn the tables, no other character had any real hints at it.
So if anything I think the backlash against Riya is less deserved than most of the other characters.
And all of those characters received vocal backlash and displeasure / grumbling from the community until those options were implemented at a later date, so long as her plot armor stays to protect her from the consequences of her actions, players will be displeased. The options to retaliate IS NOT guaranteed until its implemented and until such time the displeasure is expected and in line with past trends every time one of these characters is introduced.

Indeed Fen Fen, I acknowledge and understand that some people would find that to be quite enjoyable and more power to them to be frank. Even if I don’t personally understand it or see how it could be fun, but from a game play and writing perspective its leaves a bad taste in my mouth, even people that enjoy being someones bitch have the power to give up there there agency voluntarily and choose to submit, in this scene the PCs agency is suddenly stripped from him and he has no recourse in the matter to gain that agency back, there were often not given that choice. In a game that is all about player agency if nothing else. The only way for someone lacking in a penchant for being domineerd to “win” with her is or not play.
TiTS as you well know has a surprising amount of consequences and rewards for your choices, more then would be expected from a porn game. And to suddenly stumble onto a path were your choices don’t matter and the game was rigged from the start without warning…well some will love it but for others its going to leave a number of players feeling quite bitter.
However at the end of the day people are getting passionate because of there attachment to the setting and the characters in it and the choices they have made with them, far larger games can not say they have achieved that. In spite of whatever drama this character and others will produce that is something to be proud of.

Was your character a half-Ausar when you started the game? It may be registering your beginning race instead of your current race, I’m not entirely sure how it works.
Nope. I presume it’s pointing out the success of Ausar’s as a counter point, but as my character is a human turned aliens hybrid, it’s a bit of a weak comeback.

I’m amazed that somebody has written a character that doesn’t follow the formula of:
1. Hello, I am a character, here is several paragraphs telling you about how I’m just a regular ol’ Joe just trying to make it in this crazy universe. I’m likeable and unobtrusive, maybe considered a bit dull except for my kinks a, b, and c. [winky face]
2. What, you are THE Captain Steele?
3. Fuck me!

I can’t see why. I mean.. so few games actually give any sort of acknowledgement to the PC, even when everyone knows they’re literally the savior of the fucking town/city/nation/world/galaxy/universe.
I mean.. a little “Holy cow, you’re X! Woah, no way!” is a million times better than “Who? Whatever, this gun is 20k, this one’s 22k, but uses lasers, and this one’s only 3k but blows up frequently. Pick your poison.”
I mean, sure, you’re not the savior of whatever in this game, but you’re still supposed to be a highly publicized figure, at the very least most people should recognize your name from the side of a freighter or something and be “Oh, huh! Small galaxy, nice to meet you!”
Frankly, some variation of 2 for most encounters is what /I/ like because it makes sense.
If you didn’t want people to suddenly try to treat Steele special or nicer in some way due to who they are then you should have just made the character some rando that’s a nobody instead of the legitimate heir of a world-gallivanting super quadra-bazillionaire.
Sycophancy is just something that people do around celebrities/super rich people. They want summadat sweet sweet monies/fame so they kiss ass. Sure, that can be annoying, but even if they don’t go that far at the very least recognizing an important person or soon-to-be important person is just something you should do for your own sake as, at the very least, it keeps you up to date on what’s going on in the galaxy around you.

Racism or sexism are two huge triggers for many people and even if they aren’t a trigger people still consider it to be wrong and consider people that are racist/sexist to be wrong. And the ones that are aggressive about their racism/sexism are often met with similar aggression/hate.
These sorts of characters don’t generally go over well. Personally, I feel that you could have done the whole “IMMA DOM YOU!” thing without hitting the racist button, yet if you wanted this sort of negative reaction out of most people then you accomplished exactly what you were looking for. 😉

One of my favorite fantasy settings is Dragonlance, or as I like to call it, Fantasy racism: the game. Elves hate humans for fucking up nature and causing the Cataclysm. Elves hate dwarves for being stubborn and worshipping a neutral god (something they view as too close to evil for comfort). They also hate them for being ugly, drinking overmuch, and a dozen other things. They hate kender for being kleptomaniac midgets. They hate minotaurs for being big, dump, evil brutes. They hate ogres for much the same reason.
Every race has massive sets of prejudices, and how they play off one another can be quite fun.
In TiTS, the universe is largely too fuckable for open racist, but a former special forces officer who perhaps lost some human friends to aliens, or lost friends due to an alien betraying them? Makes total sense.
I guess what I’m saying is – if you’re going to get upset over pretend racism, you should probably be upset by pretend rape, pretend assault on a police officer, pretend theft, pretend indecent exposure, and all the other myriad wrongs the player can do in game.
While your logic is sound, there is no reference or cause at least as far as I can tell, for her racism (within her dialog at least). She just is, and with out a cause it just irks me to no end. But I’ll just stick to my standard of, if I don’t like it I don’t “do” it, or in other words I avoid it and enjoy the rest of the game.
I find it hilarious that the playerbase seems to be OK with sexual crimes (like completely brain washing an entire planet with the treatment) or indecent exposure or rape as you said, or just stuff like rampant fuckery of anything and everything that comes across your path, but a little racism triggers the fuck out of them. Hilarious stuff. I’m pretty sure most people would be a lot more triggered by other things than some fictional racism, than again I guess a smut community is a fair bit different.

Will successfully punching her block any of the options that will become available after level 8? I would like to know so that if I choose to do it, I’m not punished for it in a future build. You should be able to bed busky as a feminine character if you can get him to model clothes. At least I remember it being that way in the design doc.

Actually no, you have to be 20% masculinity to be able to actually sex him. He’s not into characters that are feminine period, trust me, I tried, didn’t work.
He’ll model for you and you can do the chest worship thing, but that’s literally all you can do if you don’t meet that requirement.
Speaking as someone who never really had a problem with Kelt, I really fucking hate Riya.
The way she speaks, the way she looks, everything about her makes me just want to stop playing the game when I’m around her. Her attitude is like a terrible anime villain, lording over the protag that they can’t do anything to stop them and then the writer makes up everything with the power of plot armor to stop them from doing anything. The way she talks also makes me skin crawl and my blood boil, and not in a “oh, this is well written and made me feel something.” kind of way. It genuinely upsets me in a way that I haven’t felt in a long, long time.
I’m not sure if we’re going to have another Steph on NT phase with this character, but it isn’t going to be pretty.

Kelt was a dick, but we put up with him for several reasons:
1) he gave us a new skill to make our suffering worthwhile.
2) his target audience was of decent size.
3) we could always turn the tables on him if we got sick of his bullshit.
4) he wasn’t really THAT bad, at least in my opinion.
5) he was at least well written.
Riya, as of right now, is just like kelt, minus all of the good aspects, with all of the bad ones cranked up to 11.
Everyone is bitching about not liking Riya, and here I am, just hype for the next public patch. I use the Facebook method…don’t like something in TiTs? Don’t play that content, this is a free(ish) game we are getting here, everything in it isn’t going to be for everyone.

Even better, since IIRC from reading the doc and the submission thread, you’ll still have the option to deal with her presence on Tavros for good whenever it’ll get implemented.
I want to be able to legit fight her besides clocking her once. I kinda like having an asshole character, just want to be able to do more.
