We’re switching to immediate building billing (HOW DIDN’T I NOTICE THAT TYPO?) on Patreon soon. What that means is that soon, as soon as you subscribe on Patreon, it’s going to charge you. I’m pretty sure it SHOULD be prorated depending on what point in the month it is. The reason for this is for linking on this site – new accounts aren’t getting benefits here until they get billed – which can take up to a month. That sucks.
This should also cut down on Patreon piracy, AKA, backing someone, downloading shit, and cancelling your pledge. Don’t do it kids. It’s a jackass maneuver.

I have no issue with this. Not sure if you’d lose access the moment you unpledged or if it would wait till the end of the month. Gotta check with Ged~
Hopefully, donor status would remain through the pledged month. That would be the best case scenario and could potentially lead to a sporadic increase in the number of pledges you recieve if people know they can pledge for a month, get billed and then unpledge until they can afford to pledge again, without losing status for the pledged month.
You’d definitely keep access for a little while- the site only updates the pledge status when you first bind a Patreon account and then on set days after that. I think I just blindly wrote it so that if a pledge had any end-date set, it would consider the pledge over and done with (ie no longer an active pledge).
I’ll have to dig in to sort the immediate-billing changes out anyway, so I’ll make sure it’ll stick out until the end-date’s month is over too.

I pirated shit all the time in college. I don’t condone, but I do understand it. That said, CoC was an attempt to repay the internet for some of that. I’m not gonna start slinging DMCA reports. I am just going to pump out so many backer builds that it’s way more convenient to sling me $5 and get the shit automatically.

Admittedly I’ve pledged, downloaded, then unpledged a couple times for games on Patreon. Though, I only did it because I had expected to like the game (I’m very impulsive with money and generally don’t play demos first), then didn’t and proceeded to stop playing what I downloaded. Also, until less than a week ago I thought I was still going to be charged at the end of the month regardless, so I didn’t realize that it actually got me out of paying. I need to pay closer attention to my bank account, to be honest.
